About Nevis Club - Science Sunday
These free interactive sessions are designed to spark curiosity and make science engaging for young minds, all within the welcoming surroundings of Eastgate Shopping Centre.
Nevis Club Science Sunday is free to attend and perfect for families looking to combine learning with a day out at Eastgate. More Science Sunday themes will be announced throughout the year, so keep an eye on our website and follow Eastgate on social media for the latest updates.
2026 Timetable of activities
January 25th – Simple Circuits
Kids will explore electricity by building simple circuits with batteries, wires, and bulbs. Great indoor winter activity. Optional extension: series vs parallel circuits for older kids.
February 22nd – Static Electricity
Experiments with balloons, combs, and paper to explore electric charge and forces. Fun and engaging, especially in dry winter conditions when static is more noticeable.
March 29th – Building Structures
Children design and build towers or bridges using marshmallows, sticks, or LEGO. Focuses on engineering, stability, and forces. Seasonal twist: test “wind-resistant” structures to link to March weather.
April 26th – Plant Capillary Action
Using celery or flowers in coloured water, kids can see how plants move water. Introduces plant biology and fluid movement. Optional math twist: measure how far water travels.
May 31st – Paper Aeroplanes
Kids make and test paper aeroplanes to learn about air resistance, lift, and forces. Seasonal twist: outdoor flight testing. Optional STEM extension: experiment with different wing shapes or paper types.
June 28th – Leak-Proof Bag
Using zip bags and pencils, children explore why some bags don’t leak. Teaches polymers and properties of materials. Optional STEM twist: predict how many pencils before leaking.
July 26th – Rocket Power
Balloon rockets, straw rockets, or small water rockets demonstrate action-reaction forces and motion. Great outdoor summer activity. Optional extension: measure flight distances.
August 30th – Propelling Leaves / Nature Engineering
Kids design ways to make leaves spin or fly using air or simple machines. Teaches aerodynamics, design thinking, and observation skills. Optional math twist: test which leaf shapes travel furthest.
September 27th – Invisible Ink
Writing with lemon juice or baking soda that appears with heat or chemical treatment. Introduces chemical reactions and observation skills. Optional extension: compare effectiveness of different “inks.”
October 25th – Magnetic Slime
Children make slime that reacts to magnets. Covers magnetism and materials science. Seasonal twist: Halloween “spooky” theme. Optional STEM twist: measure how far slime moves toward a magnet.
November 29th – Storm in a Jar
Using water, ice, and shaving foam to simulate rain clouds. Teaches weather science, condensation, and precipitation. Optional extension: time how long it takes for “rain” to form or test different water temperatures.
