Eastgate Shopping Centre is proud to have been awarded the Space to Change National award for Scotland and the Individual Washroom Cleaner of the Year award for Scotland in the 2019 Loo of the Year Awards – ‘the Washroom Oscars’.
The Loo of the Year Awards and associated Washroom Cleaner of the Year Awards have been identifying the best washrooms in Britain since 1987 and have one simple objective - to encourage the highest possible standards in all ‘away from home’ washrooms.
Eastgate received an unannounced visit from a Loo of the Year Awards Inspector and was assessed against 101 judging criteria – including signage and décor, fixtures and fittings and overall standards of cleanliness and management.
Known locally as The Lachie Smith Room, Eastgate’s Space to Change facility was upgraded last year. Inverness Common Good Fund agreed a grant of £5,000 to Shopmobility in 2018 to upgrade the facility - this grant was then matched by the Eastgate Shopping Centre who agreed to carry out the works.
Recognised by Changing Places (a national consortium campaigning to provide fully accessible toilet facilities), The Lachie Smith Room, which is cleaned and maintained by Eastgate’s cleaning team, can be found in the main lift lobby of Falcon Gallery Car Park (Level 2) and is the only facility of its kind in the city. Accessed via a Radar key, the room features a hoist to enable easy movement.
The Washroom Cleaner of the Year Awards form part of the annual Loo of the Year Awards but relate specifically to the cleaning staff who look after facilities, rather than washrooms themselves.
Jan Bell, Cleaning Supervisor at Eastgate, said: “I am honoured to have won the Individual Washroom Cleaner of the Year award for Scotland, however, there is a team of 14 dedicated cleaning staff all working diligently to achieve this national recognition so it is a team effort and a team award.”
