The Colour of Summer

Hello everyone! It always a dream to share the treasures I find on my travels around Eastgate! Today is all about the colour of Summer, how to wear ‘Paper Bag trousers’, and how to make the most of your summer dresses. Let’s dive in!

Paper bag trousers are a trend that have been very prominent this year! In my styling sessions, I’m often asked how to wear them, so read on to be imparted with some wisdom from Amanda. New Look have a wonderful array of colours available from blush pink to black, from camel to terracotta, so there will be something to suit every style and every skin tone! I’ve chosen a light neutral tone since we are still in the midst of summer (by the way - how amazing has it been so far?!), in this heat, it helps if you can wear as light a tone as you can for breathability.  Since the trousers have such a beautiful detail in the waist we want to keep the full effect and show this off.

The two-tone shell top with one half in gorgeous terracotta is perfect for this – even though it may seem shapeless in the hanger! However, once it is tucked into the trousers it serves to truly enhance the waist and – a bonus! – it doesn’t cover up the detail. My tip is once you tuck in your top, slightly pull it out for more fluidity and a softer line.

I love to mix up smart and casual so another option is to tuck in a tee and wear with soft canvas slip ons, or loafers like the ones shown. Then, add in a smart satchel bag in a complimentary hue - et viola! - a lovely laid-back look for the summer. The key basic in this story is the trousers - from them you add in different pieces to create multiple outfits. Having such a versatile staple brings you that one step closer to a capsule wardrobe, and one step closer to the reduced stress from not having to think about what goes with what!

As we move on to the khaki pair we can see how well it works the with animal print blouse, which I absolutely love love love – I’m lucky as it’s a print that never seems to go out of trend! The animal print blouse will be another key piece that you can bring into next season. It has endless possibilities for outfits, such as with the khaki trousers (remember to tuck it in!), rose gold sandals, and contrasting animal print earrings. You could also wear it open as a jacket paired with a cami underneath, such as the terracotta one pictured - the rich terracotta of the cami picks up the flash of orange in the print. For a simple glam look, you could wear the cami by itself - it would also be gorgeous on its own tucked into the trousers.

Terracotta is classed as the ‘ the colour of summer’, and it’s easy to see why! Somewhere between burnt orange and chalky red, it is in summer what brown is in winter - chic, grown-up and modern. Similar shades like cinnamon, rust and brick are all so easy to wear and can be more universally flattering than the bright, nearly-neon shades. Terracotta always makes me think of beautiful villas in my favourite place, Saint-Rémy-de-Provenceso, so it’s a winner for me already!

I have also featured the dress in the same animal print, which could also be opened up and worn over the cami with skinny jeans, paired with the rose gold sandals - in fact, that may be my outfit for this Saturday sorted!

I have talked before about linen dresses but they really are so cooling and super stylish for summer – as soon as I walked into White Stuff, this bright beauty caught my eye. The key is to find one that shows off and enhances your shape – if you’re not sure what shape will suit you, come to one of my personal styling sessions and we’ll work it out together. This is a dress you could wear to a wedding or a summer party - keep it bright and light with the necklace shown and navy wedges.  “But Amanda,” I hear you ask, “with our ever-changing Scottish climate how can we wear our linen dress?” You’re in luck - since this has such a beautifully flattering cut, and not to mention my favourite detail ever – pockets!! - you can build upon this to add layers if the weather turns a little chilly. I have added a super soft cropped Denim Jacket to anchor the bright print, a funky necklace that picks up the colours of the dress, and a navy/tan leather belt.

As always, it’s been lovely sharing my thoughts with you – stay stylish and have a fabulous weekend! Amanda x
